Reading a forestry report from the state and a number about oak wilt stopped me cold

I was looking through the Michigan DNR's annual forest health report last week, and they said a single infected red oak can produce over 100,000 fungal mats in a season. I always knew it was bad, but that specific number floored me. It really shows why the 'wait and see' approach some folks take with suspect trees is so risky. Has anyone else seen stats that changed how you handle a specific disease?

Yeah, that "wait and see" thing is exactly how it jumps to the next property. I read a study that showed the spores can travel over a mile from those mats. Makes you rethink that buffer zone.

My neighbor lost three trees waiting for a second opinion.
