Paid $150 for a deep root fertilizer treatment... still not sure if it was worth it

Last spring I had a company come out and do deep root fertilizing on my big red oak. They drilled holes around the drip line and injected some liquid mix down about 8 inches. Cost me $150 for one tree. The oak seemed greener through summer... but I can't tell if that's just because we got a lot of rain. My neighbor says I should have just spread regular granular fertilizer on the lawn instead. Anyone else tried deep root feeding and noticed a real difference compared to just top dressing?

I had the same thing done on a maple and honestly I think it helped but not $150 worth. The tree perked up a bit but so did my neighbor's maple that didn't get any treatment. If your soil is compacted or really poor then maybe it's worth it but for a healthy oak on decent ground you probably just paid for rain. I'd save your money and do a slow release granular around the drip line in early spring.

Yeah but what if the rain you paid for just got the neighbor's tree too though.

Granular fertilizer won't get down where the feeder roots are.
