I finally got why timing matters so much for oak tree pruning

I used to trim my oak trees whenever I had free time. They often developed weird cankers and looked unhealthy. One day, I noticed that the cuts I made in spring bled sap a lot, but winter cuts were clean. I looked it up and learned about oak wilt disease spreading through fresh wounds. So now I only prune during the cold months when the trees are not active. This small change saved my trees from getting sick. It's amazing how a simple observation fixed a big problem.

Yeah, that whole timing thing is so hit or miss. My neighbor swears by winter pruning too, but his trees still got some weird fungus last year. Makes you wonder if it's just luck sometimes.

Wait, I've had the opposite happen. My trees got hit hard with blight even after I switched to winter cuts. Maybe it's not just about timing but also your local climate and soil stuff. Timing helps but it's not the whole fix.

My trees look even sadder than usual this year, so maybe @pat_webb45 is onto something with the whole climate and soil thing (I'm clearly no expert).
