Vent: took me 5 years to finally give in on parts warranties
I used to think paying extra for extended warranties on compressors was a waste... till I had to replace a sealed system 3 times in one year at a shop in Tulsa. Now I won't touch a job without at least a 2 year warranty on the part. Any of you guys buy the cheap warranty just to keep the customer happy?

Three compressor failures in one year is brutal, I'd probably be the same way after that. Idk, maybe it's just me but if you're trusting a part to not screw up someone's whole summer you kinda want some backup for it.

Not gonna lie, I kinda think having parts go bad three times in a year is more of an outlier situation than a reason to go all in on warranties. I mean, how often does that really happen? Maybe it's just me but I've had sealed systems hold up for years without paying extra for coverage. Customers get enough sticker shock these days already without adding warranty costs on top of everything.

Wait, how often do you see sealed systems actually go bad outside of warranty though? I get what you're saying about outliers, but three failures in twelve months isn't exactly a fluke when you look at how many units are built with cheap parts these days. We're not in 2010 anymore where stuff lasted a decade without issues. The real sticker shock comes when a compressor or evaporator coil dies four years in and the repair bill is half the price of a new system. I've had more than one customer tell me they wish they'd spent the extra 200 bucks upfront instead of facing a 1500 dollar repair two years later. Sure not every unit will fail like that, but once you see enough of them die young you start wondering if the odds are really that low.
