That customer in Scottsdale who offered me a beer mid-fix

I was swapping out a control board on a fridge, and the homeowner just slid a cold one onto the floor next to my toolbox. He said, 'You look like you need this more than I do.' It was a simple act, but it reminded me that a lot of this job is about the human connection, not just the wires and parts. What's the nicest thing a client has done for you while you were on a job?

Honestly, that line about "human connection, not just the wires" really hits home. Tbh the nicest thing is when a client actually listens and learns. I had this older lady ask me to explain every step while I fixed her disposal, and she was just so thankful to understand. It felt like I was helping her feel less scared of her own house, not just doing a chore. That kind of respect for your time and skill beats a free drink any day.

Ask if that little diagram ever turned into a thing where they started texting you random DIY questions afterward lol. The kinda people who really listen usually end up wanting a hotline to your brain. Not saying it's bad, just funny how fast it goes from "teach me" to "you're my new personal home repair guru." Did you ever hear back from her after the disposal fix?

My buddy who does HVAC had a similar thing last winter. He was replacing a thermostat for this couple, and the husband followed him around asking why each wire went to a certain terminal. My friend spent an extra twenty minutes just drawing a little diagram on a notepad. The guy sent a photo of that drawing a month later when the wife was worried about the fan not turning on, and they fixed it themselves. He said it made him feel like a teacher, not just a repair guy.
