My uncle said to never trust the error codes on a Samsung fridge

He told me to always start with the defrost heater and board first, even if the display says something else. Sure enough, a job last Tuesday was showing a fan error but it was a bad heater the whole time. Do you guys follow the codes or go straight for the common fixes?

My uncle gave me the same exact advice on his old Samsung. I've learned to just check the heater first, it saves so much time.

Spot on, @angelapalmer. It's like we all have that one simple fix we learn the hard way. I always check if my laptop charger is actually plugged into the wall before I panic. My dad will spend twenty minutes looking for his phone while it's in his hand. It's funny how often the big problem has a tiny, obvious solution we just skip right over. What's your other go-to check for stuff like that?

@angelapalmer I gotta gently push back on the heater-first thing, only because the older Samsung models didn't always have that issue. The newer ones with the digital inverter compressors, I've seen a bad main board throw a fan error code and the heater was fine. Always start with the defrost heater and board, sure, but don't skip checking the actual error code against the service manual for that exact model. I learned that the hard way after swapping a heater on a fridge that just needed a $25 thermistor. It saves time in the long run to verify the code matches the symptoms before you start swapping parts.
