Why does everyone I know skip the renters insurance add-on?

I spent 3 years in a walkup on the third floor and never thought twice about it until the guy below me had a grease fire that took out both our units, $4,200 in damages out of my own pocket later. Does your landlord actually verify you have coverage, or is it just a checkbox nobody checks in your building either?
