Unpopular opinion: I hung all my wall stuff with the cheap nails for 3 years before a shelf crashed at 2am
I used those little white picture nails for everything in my 500 sq ft studio, even a 15 lb shelf of books, because my landlord said anchors would cost me my deposit. Last Tuesday at 2am the shelf ripped out of the drywall and dumped everything on my floor, and the guy at the hardware store on 5th showed me the anchors cost $4 and the patch kit cost $6. So is it worth risking your stuff and your sleep to save a few bucks, or do you just eat the deposit and hang things the right way?

Did your friend ever tell you about the time I watched this exact thing happen to him? My buddy Dave did the same thing in his old place, hung a heavy mirror with those little white nails because he was scared of losing his deposit. One night it came down and took a chunk of drywall with it, plus the mirror shattered. His landlord charged him $150 out of the deposit for the repair anyway, way more than anchors would have cost. So he paid twice, once for the cheap nails and again for the damage. The lesson is you don't really save money by going cheap, you just pay later when it all falls down.
