The shared laundry room timer trick that saved my Sunday

Last month in my building on Clement St, I kept missing my wash slot because someone always snuck in ahead of me. I started setting a kitchen timer for exactly 12 minutes before my load ended, and now I camp out in the hall reading a book until it buzzes. Has anyone else found a simpler way to beat the laundry room vultures?
