My upstairs neighbor's tub drain leaked through my ceiling on a Sunday, and I learned why you photograph everything
So last Sunday around 7am I'm making coffee and a brown water stain the size of a dinner plate shows up on my bathroom ceiling, right over the light fixture. I run upstairs, and my neighbor had no clue her tub drain was leaking, she'd just gotten out of the shower. Here's the thing nobody tells you: my landlord tried to say it was probably my fault because I never reported the little paint bubble that had been there for a few weeks. Lucky for me I had taken phone pics of that bubble when I first saw it, with the date on them, and that was the whole argument right there. I also put a bucket under the drip and poked a tiny hole in the ceiling so the water would drain instead of pooling, which my handyman uncle swears by. The neighbor's renters insurance ended up covering my ruined bath mat and a cheap shelf, and the whole ceiling patch took the maintenance guy like 2 hours. So now I keep a running photo album on my phone of anything weird in this place, doors, walls, ceiling, all of it. Does anyone else do the photo log thing, or am I being extra about it?
Wait, your landlord actually tried to blame YOU for the leak? That is wild. A paint bubble is not a leak, and the fact that they jumped straight to pinning it on you says a lot about how these people operate. Good thing you had those pics with dates on them, because without that it would have been your word against theirs and you know how that goes. Poking that hole in the ceiling is smart too, my dad did the same thing when our upstairs neighbor flooded us and it saved the drywall from caving in. Two hours to patch it is nothing compared to what it could have been if the water just sat there pooling over a light fixture. Keeping a photo log is not extra at all, it is just smart, and I started doing the same thing after reading stuff like this.
