Tried to fix my manager's scheduling mess with a shared color coded calendar and now I'm the bad guy
Our team of 9 was always double booked so I built a shared color coded calendar in Sheets over one weekend and asked everyone to mark their days off. Two people ignored it, a client got booked at 7am on a Saturday, and my manager blamed the calendar instead of the people who never filled it out. I spent 6 hours building something nobody asked me to use, and I'm still hearing about that Saturday call. Learned the hard way that you can't fix a process problem with a tool when the people above you don't want to enforce anything. Has anyone else built a system that blew up on them because nobody else actually used it?
Been there. Built a whole tracker once that showed exactly who was dropping the ball, and instead of using it to fix the problem they used it to point fingers at me when it didn't magically work. The hard truth is a shared doc only works if the person in charge makes people use it, otherwise you just made yourself the free IT guy nobody asked for. Next time get your manager to agree on the rule first, in writing, before you build anything.
