The server room flood that almost cost me my job

Last Tuesday, a pipe burst above our main server rack at the office in Austin. I walked in to find water dripping right onto the backup power unit. I grabbed trash cans and towels, yelled for help, and we got everything powered down in about ten minutes. The boss was furious, but the real damage was just some fried cables. Has anyone else had a close call with office infrastructure that made your heart stop?

Man, that feeling when you see water near the servers is just pure panic, isn't it? We had a fire sprinkler head get bumped by a cleaning crew once, and it let go right over the main storage array. The sound of that hiss and spray is something you never forget. You just move on pure adrenaline, trying to throw a tarp or anything over the gear. It really makes you question every single design choice in the whole building after that.

Ever think about how many places have water pipes right over critical gear? Saw a setup once where the main network switch was directly under an old AC drip pan. They only found out when it started raining on a Tuesday. That's just asking for trouble. Makes you want to check your own ceiling tiles, you know?
