Just realized my boss's "we're all family" speech was hiding a 1099 switch
I always figured the whole "we take care of our own here" thing at my job was just normal small business talk, until I found our old pay stubs in a box in the supply closet last Tuesday. Back in March they moved all 8 of us from W-2 to 1099 and my take-home check only went down $40 a month, so I assumed it was no big deal. Then my cousin, who does taxes in Albany, ran the numbers for me and said I'm on the hook for about $6,200 in self-employment tax this year that the company used to cover. Now I'm sitting here wondering how many other people signed that paper without reading the fine print. Has anyone actually pushed back on a switch like this and gotten it reversed?
