I had to pick between covering for my boss or telling the truth to a client.

A client in Chicago asked me directly if a report was delayed because my boss dropped the ball. I could have lied and said it was a system issue, but I just said 'there was a delay on our end, and I'm handling it now.' I sent the report myself that afternoon. It felt scary but right. Has anyone else had to make a call like that where you could have thrown someone under the bus?

Oh man, a friend of mine once had to cover for their coworker's screw up and it still bugs them.

My friend once covered for a manager who forgot a key meeting. She just told the client they'd connect later that day, which kept things moving without blame. That kind of professional cover usually builds more trust than pointing fingers would.

Covering for someone's mistake just lets them keep messing up. I'd rather be honest so the real problem gets fixed.
