The lease cancellation math finally made me walk away from my gym
I'd been paying $89 a month for 14 months at that big box gym but never used the pool or classes, just the free weights. Then I read a consumer report that said the average person who cancels a membership saves $1,200 a year, and I realized my old neighborhood gym charges $40 with no contract and the same squat racks. Was I the jerk for quitting over a spreadsheet, or is that just smart money?

Honestly, good for you. I’ve been in that exact spot where you add up the numbers and feel kinda dumb for sticking with the fancy place. The pool and classes sound nice until you realize you never use them, and that's just paying for stuff you don't need. $49 a month difference is basically a car payment or a chunk of groceries, so that's real money. Plus, no contract is a huge win because you can leave whenever you want, no guilt trip or paperwork fight. You weren't being petty, you were just being smart with your cash. That spreadsheet math is the only thing that makes sense in the end.
