TIL the torque wrench setting on a C-130 panel is a suggestion, not law
Been turning wrenches on Hercs since 2012 out of Little Rock. Everyone swears by the exact torque values in the manual for the lower fuselage access panels. After 8 months of stripped threads and cracked fasteners, I tried backing off the spec by 15 percent on the smaller screws, the ones under size 8. Zero failures so far across 40 plus panels we've cycled for corrosion inspection. The manual is a baseline, not a Bible, and the stress on those thin skins just isnt the same as the manual's test rig. Has anyone else found that some official torque numbers are just too high for field conditions on older airframes?

15% off and zero failures on forty panels? That's wild, man.
