Serious question, chose between signing off on a patched leading edge or ordering a new skin for a 172
Last week I had a 1978 172N in the shop with a decent sized ding in the leading edge of the left wing, about the size of a half dollar. I could either blend it out and sign it off with a repair, or order a new skin and do the whole rivet job. I went back and forth on it for a day because the owner is a flight school and they needed the plane back for a checkride. I called the FSDO and talked it through with a guy there for 20 minutes, and he said as long as I stayed inside the limits in AC 43.13-1B it was fine. I blended it, measured it three times, and signed it off. Owner picked it up that afternoon, plane flew the checkride the next morning. Now I keep second guessing myself, was that the right call or should I have just ordered the skin and eaten the downtime? Curious what you guys do when it's right on the edge of blend or replace.
