Put the new alternator on my 172 or sent the old one out for rebuild, and now I'm second guessing the whole thing
Had a charging issue on a 1978 Cessna 172 last month and the owner gave me the call on whether to drop in a new alternator or send the original out for overhaul. I went with the rebuild at a shop in Tulsa since it saved him about $400, but the turnaround took 12 days and the plane sat there the whole time. Now I'm wondering if I should've just eaten the cost difference and gotten it flying sooner. Any of you run into this with owners who care more about downtime than the invoice?
Check if that shop in Tulsa can turnaround an exchange unit first, some of them keep spares on the shelf for exactly this reason. Saving $400 means nothing if the owner misses two weeks of flying weather in the fall.
