Overheard a line in the break room that stuck with me all week

Was grabbing coffee Tuesday morning at the hangar in Tulsa and heard one of the older guys, Pete, tell a new hire, "If it ain't leaking, it ain't flying right." He meant it as a joke about hydraulic fluid, but I spent the next hour checking every torque seal on a 737 that had zero drips. Made me realize how easy it is to trust a funny saying over the manual. Any of you ever catch yourself following a coworker's joke when the paperwork says something different?

Skip the whole debate about trusting jokes versus manuals and think about the weird part of it. That line worked on the new guy because it gave him something to keep in his head, a rhythm to work by, even if it was garbage. Nobody gets a ritual out of reading an FAA circular, you know? So maybe the real issue isn't that Pete was wrong, it's that we don't give rookies better short cuts that actually match the book. That little saying probably stuck in that kid's brain for his entire shift too, which is kind of scary when you think about torque stresses.
