Older tech said my torque method was lazy, now I question everything

Guy with 30 years in overhaul told me I was torquing fasteners wrong, using the old 'spin to spec without backing off' trick. I switched to the full loosen and retorque cycle on every critical bolt, takes twice as long but zero comebacks since. Do you follow the textbook torque procedure or trust the shortcut when the clock is running?
