Old-timer told me to stop using safety wire pliers on locknuts, he was right

This old A&P at our hangar in Tulsa, been doing this since the 70s, watched me crank down a jam nut with my safety wire pliers and he just shook his head. He said "kid, those are for wire, not for torque, you're gonna squash the threads." I brushed it off, figured he was just being old school. Then I stripped a nut on a fuel line fitting, real nasty, had to chase the threads with a tap and the whole job took me an extra 2 hours. He didn't even say I told you so, just handed me a proper crowsfoot wrench. Now I got a set of those in my box and I never grab the pliers for anything but wire. Anyone else learned a dumb basic lesson that cost them a whole afternoon on the line?
