Nearly had a prop strike because someone couldn't torque a simple spinner bulkhead
I was doing a post-flight yesterday on a 172 and found the spinner screws backed out almost halfway on one side. The last guy who worked this plane obviously just snugged them with a screwdriver instead of using a torque wrench. If that spinner came loose in flight, it could have chewed up the cowling or worse, gotten into the prop. I've seen this mistake way too often from new mechanics who think spinner work is just cosmetic. It costs you maybe an extra 5 minutes to do it right with the proper tool. Have any of you dealt with loose spinner hardware on a walk-around?

Have you ever noticed how "it's just cosmetic" is basically the unspoken motto for like half the mistakes people make in every trade, not just aviation? I mean, I've seen plumbers leave a fitting hand-tight because it's "just a drain line" until it causes a slow leak inside a wall, or electricians skip a torque spec on a breaker because "it'll hold fine." Maybe it's just me, but I feel like the whole "good enough for government work" attitude is what makes those little 5-minute shortcuts turn into a 5-hour repair or worse, a safety issue. That spinner bulkhead thing is a perfect example of how something that looks trivial on the ground can become a real problem when physics and vibration get involved.

I see where you're coming from @michael_jones, and I get the frustration with people cutting corners. But I actually think calling it a "good enough for government work" attitude misses the real problem here. The issue isn't that people are lazy or don't care about quality. It's that a lot of mechanics especially the newer ones just don't understand how vibration works in a small plane. They see a spinner as a static part, not something that gets shaken around every time the engine runs. Torque specs on things like spinner bulkheads aren't there because someone was being picky. They're there because engineers tested what happens at different RPMs and found that hand tight or even snug with a screwdriver can back out over time. So it's less about attitude and more about a lack of experience with how things behave in the air versus on the ground. I'd rather have a green mechanic who takes 10 minutes to read the manual than an old hand who thinks he knows when a shortcut is safe.
