Figured out after 8 years that I'd been installing hydraulic packings backward

Watched a senior mechanic swap a nose gear actuator on a 737 in about 20 minutes while I'd been fighting the same job for an hour, and then he pointed out the seal lip was facing the wrong way - has anyone else had that moment where you realize you've been doing a basic thing wrong for way too long?
