Tried to save money by cutting my own hair last weekend
Big mistake. Used kitchen scissors and ended up with a chunk missing right above my left ear. Had to pay $45 at Great Clips to fix it the next day. Anyone else learn this lesson the hard way?

You know what, cutting your own hair is basically a rite of passage at this point. I still remember my first attempt back in high school, gave myself bangs with craft scissors because I was convinced I could pull off that Zooey Deschanel look. Ended up with this weird crooked fringe that made me look like I was perpetually surprised. My mom took one look at me and just sighed really loudly before dragging me to the beauty school down the street. The student there charged me $12 and still had to trim it back to basically half an inch long to even things out. Now I just tell myself that the $20 for a proper haircut every few months is cheaper than therapy or a hat collection.

Lisa, you just described my entire 8th grade year. I still have the photo to prove it, the one where my bangs looked like a jagged staircase. Best advice I can give is invest in a pair of proper haircutting shears, the cheap craft scissors are a disaster waiting to happen. Also, always cut wet hair and start way longer than you think, you can always take more off. That tip alone would have saved me from walking around looking like I lost a fight with a lawnmower for three months straight.
