Tried the whole 50/30/20 budget thing, my utility bill ate my fun money

I set aside $450 for entertainment last month in Grand Rapids, but my electric bill came in at $212 over because of a faulty water heater I'd ignored for 2 years. Do I fix the heater now and skip groceries, or just accept that budgets are a joke for rentals? Anyone else have a surprise bill completely wreck their spreadsheet?

Wait, a faulty water heater doesn't usually show up on your electric bill, it's gas or electric but the heating part is what draws power, so $212 over seems more like a billing issue or a rate hike than just a bad heater. Fixing it won't lower a bill that spiked from something else, so check your usage history first before you drain your grocery money. Budgets aren't a joke, you just got hit with a real repair that nobody plans for.
