The day my landlord laughed at my leaky faucet repair attempt

Last month I tried to fix a dripping faucet in my apartment using a $12 wrench set from a hardware store on 5th Street. I watched two YouTube videos and felt pretty confident, but when I took the handle off, water shot straight up and soaked my kitchen ceiling and my work laptop. My landlord came by to check the damage and just stood there laughing for a solid minute before saying, 'You know I would have charged you $50 less if you'd just called me first.' I ended up paying $180 for a plumber plus $90 for a new laptop keyboard. Has anyone else made a small home repair way worse than if they'd just left it alone?
