The 401k match myth that cost me $800 before I woke up

Everyone says fully fund your 401k first, but I got the match and put the rest in a low fee index fund last July, then watched my coworker's take home pay drop for nothing when the market dipped 9% in three weeks. My emergency fund at 3 months made me dip into a credit card for car repairs, and that 22% interest hit hurt way more than any tax break. Has anyone else skipped the full match to keep cash liquid and gotten burned by a reddit echo chamber telling you otherwise?
