The 2 AM text that exposed my roommate's 'bill share' spreadsheet
Last Tuesday I woke up to a wall of messages from my roommate in Austin demanding $180 for utilities I apparently owed for the past 4 months. Turns out she'd been 'tracking' our split in a Google Sheet that she never shared with me, and the numbers included her new gaming PC's power draw. I pulled up my bank app and saw I'd been Venmo-ing her the same $75 every month like clockwork, but she said that was only for internet and cable. When I asked her to show me the actual electric bill, she got weird and said she'd 'taken care of it already'. That's when I realized I never once asked to see a bill, I just trusted the number she threw out. Now I'm going back through a year of texts and payments trying to figure out if I overpaid by $400 or if she's just bad at math. Has anyone else gotten burned by a roommate who runs their own private accounting system?
