Rant: My conversation with my landlord made me realize I've been ignoring water bills for 6 months

Honestly, my landlord called me yesterday to say my water usage is triple the normal amount for a single person. I thought I was just taking long showers. Turns out my toilet has been silently running since April. I never checked because the bill was auto paid from my account. Talked to a plumber today and he said I probably wasted like $400 extra. Has anyone else had a hidden leak that just drained their wallet without any obvious signs?

Used to think those "check your toilet for leaks" tips were just for paranoid people, you know, the kind who nickel and dime everything. Totally changed my mind after I found a similar slow drip in my place last year, same thing, the bill just kept creeping up but I blamed the weather. Turns out the flapper valve was worn out and it was running like a tiny stream 24/7 without any noise or anything obvious. Plumber told me the same thing, wasted way too much money before I finally caught it, felt pretty dumb honestly. So yeah, I get where you're coming from, those silent leaks are sneaky and they add up fast before you even realize what's happening.

Oh man, you're totally right about those flapper valves! I had the exact same thing happen to me a couple years back and I felt so stupid when I finally figured it out. The water bill was going up maybe 15 bucks a month but it was easy to blame it on summer or the kids taking longer showers. After I replaced that little rubber part for like 5 bucks the bill dropped back down to normal. It's crazy how much a tiny leak can cost you over a few months without you ever noticing a thing. Really makes you stop and check those things now, doesn't it?
