My uncle swore I could fix my own toilet with a $12 part, and now my bathroom is a lake
So about 3 weeks ago my toilet started running nonstop. My uncle, who has fixed maybe two things in his life, tells me "it's just the flapper, $12 at any hardware place, 10 minutes tops." I believed him because he sounded so sure.
I get the flapper. I get a wrench. I turn off the water, pull the old one, put the new one on. Feeling like a plumber. Turn the water back on and the tank fills but never stops. Now it's overflowing a little. I panic, jiggle the handle, and the chain pops off the flush valve. Water just pouring onto the tile in my apartment.
Took me 4 towels and a call to my building's maintenance guy (who laughed at me) to get it under control. Turns out the fill valve was shot too, which my uncle never mentioned. $85 later and it's fixed by a guy who actually knew what he was doing.
Has anyone else taken advice from a family member who was WAY too confident? How did it go for you?
