My first tax payment to the IRS was late because I mixed up the mailing addresses

I sent my check to the old P.O. box listed on a form from two years ago, and it got returned after the due date. Has anyone else had a simple address mix-up cause a real penalty?

Ever notice how nothing ever updates its address?

Right? My old dentist still has me in their system from like three towns ago.

Wait, is getting a penalty really that big of a deal though? I mean, yeah it stinks to pay extra money to the government, but the IRS is usually pretty chill about fixing stuff like this if you call them. Plus, a lot of people I know have had late fees waived just by politely asking. Mixing up an address is super common, I bet half the people on this thread have done it too. It's not like you tried to dodge paying taxes forever, so I'd just move on and not stress too hard.
