My $200 fridge repair turned into a $900 mistake last month
I tried to fix the ice maker on my Whirlpool fridge myself after watching a YouTube video. Ended up cracking the water line behind it and flooded my kitchen floor in Austin. Had to call a plumber and buy a whole new fridge anyway. Anyone else try a DIY repair and make things way worse?

Definitely worth checking if your homeowner's insurance covers this kind of thing. When my neighbor had a similar water mess from a DIY sink swap, her policy actually paid for the floor damage and cabinet replacement minus the deductible. You'd think it wouldn't, but water damage from an accident like that is often covered, fully different than if you intentionally messed something up. Might save you a few thousand bucks if you haven't filed a claim yet, especially in Austin where floods are common enough that adjusters are used to this stuff.

Did your floor have any permanent damage from the water? My buddy in Houston tried swapping out a garbage disposal and ended up slicing through a copper pipe behind the sink, flooded his whole kitchen too. He had to tear out half the cabinets and redo the drywall, cost him way more than just a plumber would have. Now he just pays someone for any plumbing or appliance stuff, says it's cheaper in the long run. YouTube tutorials make everything look so easy until you're standing in a puddle.
