I tried to fix my own garage door and ended up calling a guy named Chuck

Last Tuesday, my garage door started making a grinding noise, so I figured I could just tighten a few bolts. I got the ladder out, climbed up, and gave the main spring a little turn with a wrench. It slipped, the whole thing spun loose, and the door dropped about a foot with a bang that shook the house. My neighbor, an older guy who was walking his dog, just stopped and said, 'Son, you just bought yourself a $300 lesson.' He was right. The repair guy charged me $325. Anyone else have a home repair that got way more expensive because you tried it yourself?

My water heater started leaking last winter and I thought I could just replace the valve. I shut off the water and power, got my tools, and ended up snapping a corroded pipe. The small drip turned into a full basement flood. The final bill for the plumber and the water damage was over two grand. I feel your pain, that garage door spring is no joke. Some jobs just have a way of telling you to step back and call a pro.

Yeah @derek_coleman, my attempt to fix a toilet turned into a similar expensive mess... learned that lesson the hard way too.
