Hit $5,000 in savings for the first time at 34 and I'm actually mad about it
Everyone acts like hitting a savings milestone is this big happy moment. I got to $5,000 last week and all I felt was stupid. I've been working since I was 16, never made more than $38k a year, and it took me until 34 to save that much. My buddy hit $10k by 25 working the same job. I just don't get how people do it without living like hermits. Is anyone else annoyed by these financial milestones instead of proud?

Right? Feels more like a participation trophy for being broke forever.

...but is it really that simple though? I get the frustration, but I've seen too many people debt their way into a house only to be utterly miserable and house poor. They can't afford to fix the water heater when it breaks, they're eating ramen just to make the mortgage, and they're one missed paycheck away from losing everything. So yeah, maybe that "participation trophy" is actually a person who made a different choice. They didn't want to be chained to a 30 year anchor just so they could look successful on social media. Sometimes the real win is having breathing room.
