Can we talk about how I paid $340 to have my taxes done and then had to redo the whole thing myself?
Two years ago I got overwhelmed by a side gig and dropped $340 at a chain tax place in Boise, figuring a pro would keep me out of trouble. The guy typed my numbers into the software and hit submit in about 12 minutes, and I only noticed the problem when my refund came in $1,100 lower than I'd estimated. I went back through the forms myself on a free filing site, and he had entered my mileage deduction as income, plus missed two 1099s entirely. So now I do my own taxes every March at my kitchen table, and my rule is if the free software flags something, I look it up instead of paying someone to rush it. How do you all handle the DIY versus pay-someone call when your return gets even slightly weird?
