Watching my buddy's group chat go from 40 texts a day to nothing in 8 months
My friend Dave started a group chat with 5 of us when his kid was born back in January, and for the first few months it was constant. Like 40 messages a day, jokes, plans, random pics. Then around month 4 it just dried up. Now it's maybe one message every two weeks and it's usually just a meme. Nothing bad happened, nobody fought. I think it's just that we all got busy and nobody wanted to be the guy who keeps pushing. I asked Dave about it last week and he said he feels weird being the one to always start it. At what point do you just let a chat die versus trying to get it going again? Feels like there's no good rule for that.
Laughed at the "nobody wanted to be the guy who keeps pushing" part because I am that guy, and let me tell you, being the group chat janitor is a lonely job. My rule is simple: if I'm the only one starting it three times in a row and get crickets, I stop. Six months from now someone will drop a meme, three people will reply "lol," and the cycle starts over. A chat dying doesn't mean the friendships died, it just means everyone's tired and the baby pics got less cute. Let it rest, then revive it when there's an actual reason like a game or a plan.
