Update: I hit 50 friends on my birthday list and it felt empty

Everyone says more friends means you're winning at adult life, but when I counted 50 people I'd call for my birthday in Chicago, it just felt like a chore list. Most are from old jobs or my gym, and we only talk about surface stuff. Has anyone else felt lonelier after hitting a big friend number that looked good on paper?

Chicago's a tough place for real friends.

A sociology paper I read said big cities create "weak tie" networks for jobs, not deep bonds. That feels true for Chicago sometimes, where everyone is busy with their own hustle. It takes a lot more effort to build something real here.
