The moment I realized I was the friend who never asked follow-up questions

It hit me last week when my coworker Marco told me about his dad's surgery, and I said "that sucks" then immediately changed the subject to my broken fridge. He gave me this look and said "you always do that, don't you?" like it was a joke but it wasn't. Has anyone else caught themselves doing the one-and-done reply thing and figured out how to actually dig deeper naturally?

Did you ask Marco what he needed from you in that moment?

I actually see it a little differently. Sometimes when you're the one going through something hard, you don't even know what you need in that moment. Marco might not have had an answer if she asked. I think sometimes just sitting with someone and not asking a bunch of questions can be more helpful. It puts pressure on the person to figure it out and say the right thing when they're already overwhelmed. Just being there quietly can say a lot more than trying to solve it with the perfect question.
