The group hangout thing I always hated actually works now

I used to roll my eyes when people said to do group hangs instead of one on ones as an adult. Then I moved to Portland 2 years ago and didn't know anyone. My neighbor invited me to a board game night at a bar with like 8 people I didn't know. I figured it'd be awkward but everyone could dip if they wanted and nobody got stuck with me. Turns out the low pressure let me actually hit it off with 2 people without the weird interview vibe. Has anyone else found a specific setup that made group friend making click for them?

@harperp31 nailed it, board games at a brewery was my unexpected win too.

Yeah low stakes activities make it way easier to meet people.
