The $75 group dinner splurge that wrecked my closest friendship

Last month I picked up the tab for a fancy hibachi place downtown because my friend was having a rough week. I figured $75 was worth it. Then she expected me to cover her at a follow-up brunch, and when I asked to split it, she called me cheap in front of two other people. We haven't spoken since. I get that money and friendship are messy, but has anyone else had a treat backfire like that? How do you set boundaries without sounding stingy?
