Serious question, has anyone else flipped the switch on calling friends just to chat?
I used to think phone calls were only for bad news or making plans, and for years I kept every friendship going through texts and the occasional group chat. My old college roommate Dave moved to Cincinnati about four years ago and we had drifted down to a couple of texts a year, mostly just birthday stuff. Back in March I read somewhere that a quick call beats a long text, and I laughed it off at first because it felt awkward and pushy. Then one Sunday I was sitting on my porch with nothing going on and just dialed him. We ended up talking for 40 minutes about his kid's tee ball team and a busted water heater, and it felt easier than I expected. Since then I've done the same thing with three other people, and two of them said something like "man, I'm glad you called, I never know when it's okay." Now I try to ring one person a week instead of sending a paragraph nobody reads. Curious if other folks here have done the same, and how you get past that weird feeling right before you hit call.
Honestly I'm kind of the other way on this one. I've had a few people start cold calling me out of nowhere and it felt less like catching up and more like being put on the spot, since I'm usually in the middle of something and can't give it a real 40 minutes. My take is a quick text asking "got 10 min to chat this week?" gets you most of the upside without the awkward part. Your mileage may vary though, sounds like it's working for you and Dave.
