Rant: dropped $180 on a 'friend finder' speed dating event in Denver
Paid $180 for a 3 hour speed dating thing billed as a way to meet genuine friends, but it was basically a sales pitch for their singles app. Has anyone else blown cash on those social meetup gimmicks that just push products?

The "genuine friends" part got me too. I fell for a similar thing last year, a "networking social" that was just a 45 minute pitch for their coaching program. Now I only go to stuff that's free or under $20, and I check the event host's past events first. If they run a bunch of these for different topics, it's almost always a funnel. Try meetup.com groups that are hobby specific, like hiking or board games. Those are usually run by actual people, not companies, and nobody tries to sell you anything.
