Overheard a friend say 'I just don't have time for coffee anymore' and it hit me hard

I was at my kid's soccer game in Portland last Saturday and overheard two moms talking. One said she stopped meeting up with friends because scheduling drinks or dinner felt like too much work. It made me realize how many of us are letting perfect expectations kill simple hangs. What do you do when a friend pulls away because they think catching up has to be a big event?

God, it's like we've all forgotten how to just grab a cheap beer and complain about our jobs for an hour. I had a friend who stopped wanting to hang out because she thought every get-together needed a themed dinner or a crafting project. Now we just text each other memes at 10pm and call it friendship.

Oh man @angelafisher you just hit on something I have been thinking about for months. I had a friend who literally stopped talking to me because I suggested we just meet at the dive bar down the street instead of doing a whole "paint and sip" thing she planned. Now our friendship is just us liking each other's Instagram stories about cats. I miss the days when hanging out meant sitting on a curb with a six pack and just talking about how much our bosses suck. Everything has to be an event now and it's exhausting.
