My neighbor's 'just show up' rule killed our dinner group in 3 weeks

Six months ago I joined a monthly dinner group with three other couples from my street. We rotated houses and everyone brought something. Sounded great on paper. But one neighbor kept pushing that if you didn't feel like cooking or cleaning, just show up empty handed and grab a beer. Fine once. Then it turned into every single time for him and his wife. By the third week, two other couples stopped replying to the group chat. I called it off before month two. I get the casual vibe, but there's a line between relaxed and freeloading. Has anyone else had a friend group die because one person treated the effort like optional homework?
