My hiking buddy bailed at mile 2, but the solo part taught me something
Last Saturday I drove 45 minutes to Red Rock Canyon for a 6 mile loop. My friend Sarah texted at the trailhead that her kid got sick, so I went alone, which I never do. By mile 4 I realized I actually talked to two strangers and took breaks when I wanted, no pressure to keep pace. Has anyone else had a planned friend thing fall through and ended up enjoying the alone version more?

Funny how we build our whole plans around other people and then forget what it feels like to just have our own back. I've noticed the same thing with lunch breaks at work, everyone assumes you gotta sit with the group or it's weird, but those days I eat alone at the park are honestly the best. It's like there's this quiet switch that flips when you stop checking in with someone else's mood or speed, you become way more tuned into what you actually want. The thing is, we don't practice being solo on purpose, so when it happens by accident it feels like a secret gift. Maybe we should all schedule one "bail-proof" plan a month just to remind ourselves we're pretty solid company.
