My buddy and I fixed a blown tire with duct tape and spite

Last Saturday on the way to a camping spot near Flagstaff, my friend's spare tire was completely flat and we were stuck at a gas station with no cell signal. I grabbed a roll of duct tape from my truck and we wrapped the sidewall crack three times, then limped 14 miles to a tire shop at 40 mph. Have any of you ever pulled off a weird roadside fix that actually worked, or should we have just called it quits?
