I spent $120 on a friendship coaching app for 3 months and it did nothing
I downloaded this app called Peanut last summer because I moved to Denver and knew zero people. It promised to help me meet other women nearby who wanted the same thing, real friendship, not dating. I paid $40 a month for the premium version because the free one only showed me 5 profiles a day. After 3 months and $120 gone, I had gone on exactly one coffee meetup and the girl spent the whole hour talking about her ex. The app kept sending me notifications like "boost your profile to get seen!" which felt like it was just squeezing more money out of lonely people. I finally deleted it and instead started going to a free Tuesday night run club at a brewery near my apartment. I have actual phone numbers now from people who text me back. Has anyone else paid for one of these apps and felt completely scammed, or did I just pick the wrong one?

The part about "boost your profile to get seen" really gets at something people miss about these apps. The whole business model depends on you not finding what you came for. If you actually made five close friends in a month, you would stop paying and delete the thing. So the app has zero reason to make matching work well. It is not broken, it is doing exactly what it was built to do, which is keep lonely people coming back and paying. Run clubs, library groups, church events, volunteer shifts, those are free and nobody makes money when you stay alone. Your $120 was not wasted on a bad app, it was wasted on a system that profits when you fail. That is the part that bugs me more than the one bad coffee date.
