Had a weird moment at trivia night that made me rethink my whole social circle

I was at a pub trivia in Denver last Friday and realized half my team hadn't talked about anything real in months. Like we knew the capital of Mongolia but I had no clue my buddy was going through a divorce. Has anyone else ever looked around at a group and felt like you're just playing roles instead of actually being friends?

Doesn't that moment just hit you like a brick to the face? I used to think trivia nights were the ultimate test of a friendship group because you're all working together, laughing, and having a good time. But after a similar wake-up call where a buddy revealed he'd been struggling with job loss for months, I realized surface-level fun can mask a total lack of real connection. Now I make a point to check in with people one-on-one outside of those group settings, because knowing obscure facts means nothing if you don't know what's actually happening in your friend's life.

Actually came across a study recently that said adults lose roughly one close friend every decade after their twenties, especially when group activities replace one-on-one hangouts. That trivia night thing is a perfect example how we substitute shared fun for actual vulnerability, you know? It's crazy how easy it is to have a whole circle of people who know your trivia skills but not your real life.

See it a bit differently honestly. Group stuff is where I feel most comfortable opening up because the pressure's off to perform some deep conversation. The people who know my trivia skills also know my real life because they're the same people I'm grabbing coffee with the next day.
