Warning: my neighbor's dog helped me find a slab leak in my Albuquerque yard
So last Saturday I'm in my backyard on the west side of Albuquerque near Coors and Montano, just minding my own business, when my neighbor's pit mix named Gus starts going nuts at a spot near my hose bib. I figured he was after a lizard, but then I noticed the dirt there was soggy even though I hadn't run the sprinklers in like 9 days. I grabbed a shovel and dug down about 14 inches and sure enough, water was seeping up through a crack in the copper line right where it comes out of the slab. The plumber quoted me $1,850 to jackhammer and reroute it, but he also said most folks ignore these for months and end up with a $6,000 foundation mess instead. I got lucky because Gus basically sniffed out the leak for free before it spread under the patio. Now I'm paranoid and check that corner every other day like a total weirdo. Has anyone here had one rerouted through the attic instead of the slab, and did your homeowners insurance pitch in at all?
My uncle had a slab leak in his Phoenix house and his dog kept sleeping on the wet tile like it was a water bed, which is how they finally figured it out. Insurance covered the reroute through the attic but not the slab repair itself, something about the pipe being the cause and the concrete being the result. Worth calling your agent just to ask, the answer usually depends on whether they call it sudden damage or long term wear.
