Thought my swamp cooler was shot, turns out it was a $14 thermostat

I spent three weekends up on the roof in Las Cruces heat swapping parts, then my neighbor pointed at the thermostat wire reading 24v when it should've been 0... replaced it in 10 minutes. Has anyone else chased a simple electrical fault for way too long before calling a buddy over?
